Games I Remember - Intro
I want to revisit some games from my past that still live in my memories today while I work through my current series of smaller games.
Partly to practice seeing design and partly to examine kernels of ideas for future projects.
What was it that made some of those games stick out so fondly in my memories?
And also what was truly terrible about them despite their impact on my thoughts today?
I plan on doing this as a set of posts over the next year, going roughly backwards in time.
Some of the games in my memories hover near each other in terms of genre, mechanics, style, or period, and so I may also analyze them in context of a larger group of games I remember playing.
I'll also note that the period I'm looking back at is, somewhat arbitrarily, before the indie scene first exploded back in the late 2000s.
Indie games coming out on Steam and XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) at that point started reaching a level of sophistication that matched much of the "big box" scenes from when I was growing up.
At least, as someone who mostly played console games... I suspect my impressions would be different had I played more of the old gems on PCs of the day.
I don't feel like I could do many games from then and later justice if I were to analyze them right now, though I can't say if I'll entirely avoid bringing some of them up.
But I digress.
Some games may be well known whereas others might be a surprise to the mainstream.
Either way, you'll feel right at home if you were a child of the 90s and 2000s.
Before posting, I intend on replaying these games, at least as much as I can stomach to get a decent recap of the design (because I know a couple I have in mind are quite awful on the whole).
And without further delay, the first game will be...
Shadow of the Colossus!
